Tyres to help fish life

NZPA-AAP Adelaide A huge artificial reef of 70,000 tyres, designed to stimulate fish life, is being built in Adelaide. The South Australian Minister of Fisheries, Mr Frank Blevins, said that it would be one of the biggest artificial reefs in the world and there was international interest in the project. The reef will be made up of separate modules, each consisting of 28 concrete-

ballasted tyres attached in a triangular pyramid shape. The modules are designed to provide safe, easily accessible living areas for fish. They would also stimulate the growth of algae and other fish food. Work started on the reef on April 16 and will take six months. When finished it will be put in about 20 metres of water about 3Vz nautical miles off Adelaide.
