Panama strikes planned

NZPA-Reuter Panama City Panama’s opposition parties say that they plan labour strikes to protest against what they consider to be the rigged victory of the Government candidate in Presidential elections on May 7.

The electoral tribunal declared yesterday that an economist, Nicolas Ardito Barletta, aged 45, had defeated the Opposition’s candidate, Arnulfo Arias, aged 82, by a tiny margin. The three-man, Govern-ment-appointed tribunal was given the task of scrutinising the results after the Electoral Council said that countless challenges to the tallies had made its work impossible.

The tribunal’s president, Cesar Quintero, said that the results were still not official because of challenges from four areas but he said those could not prevent Mr Ardito Barletta from winning.-

The Opposition coalition has alleged that the elections were rigged by the Government, effectively controlled by the National Guard, which has been the dominant power in Panama for the last 16 years. Opposition leaders earleir said that they would not call supporters on to the streets, to avoid confrontations with the National Guard.
