Battle promised on supermarket wine sales

The sale of wine in supermarkets is one issue that the new South Island regional officer of the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council, Mr Geoff Elvy, expects to tackle this year. That would mean opposing the National Association of Retail Grocers’ campaign, expected later this year, to open the way for supermarket sales of wine. Mr Elvy said yesterday he had heard already of several supermarkets in Hamilton which were licensed to sell wine. A Christchurch supermarket in Redcliffs with an existing licence has sold wine for many years.

Reducing the consumption of alcohol in New Zealand is one A.L.A.C. objective, part of a new emphasis this year on the prevention as well as treatment of alcohol-related problems.

Mr Elvy. who is one of three A.L.A.C. regional officers appointed in New Zealand, still plans to continue as director of the Alcohol Research Unit at Christchurch Hospital. The new job involves coordinating community councils on alcohol, and other agencies, throughout the South Island; providing information and advice; and working with the community and the liquor industry.
