Men arrested for murder

PA Auckland Two men were arrested vesterday in connection with the death of an Otara taxi-driver, Ta’ai Lafaele. Thev will appear in the District Court at Otahuhu this morning charged with murder. One of the men, aged 20, is from Otara, and the other, aged 22, from Otahuhu. Both are unemployed. Otahuhu detectives arrested the two men early yesterday afternoon after an intensive 24-hour investigation which, at its peak, involved about 50 police. Detective Inspector B. M. Rowe, who led the inquiry, said the police had recovered two knives, one of which was believed to be a murder weapon.

The younger man arrested in relation to the murder will also face charges in connection with the abduction of a teen-age

girl at Wiri early on Tuesday. btahuhu police have also arrested a man, aged 32, after the same incident, in which a girl, aged 16, was awakened by two intruders in a house where she was babysitting. The man, a sickness beneficiary from Wiri, will also appear in the District Court at Otahuhu today on charges related to the incident. The head of the Auckland police southern division, Chief Superintendent I. N. Bird, said last evening that he was pleased with the prompt arrest after the murder of Mr Lafaele.
