Girls allowed to join Scouts

PA Auckland Girls will be allowed to join 15 Scout troops on a trial basis in Canterbury, says the executive committee of the Scouting Association. The Auckland Scout commissioner, Mr Colin Brown, said yesterday the move follows a demand from parents in rural areas for Scout

and Guide groups to be combined because of transport difficulties. Mr Brown said that allowing some girls to join Scout troops did not clear the way for an “open arms policy.” The national executive director of the Girl Guide movement, Miss Mary Hopkirk, said that she believed there was possibly a place for girls in the Scout movement. However, she felt the Girl Guide movement still had much to offer.
