Fire at theatre

A fire broke out beneath the stage at the Repertory Theatre, last evening. Soon after 10 p.m. two fire appliances attended the fire which caused minor damage under the stage and to the orchestra pit. The theatre was not staging a production at the time, said a spokesman for the Fire Service. The alarm was raised by people who had been in the theatre and had noticed the smoke.

Smoke extraction equipment was used to ventilate the theatre. Fire also caused minor damage to the live-in accommodation of the Tahere Food Market at 325 Bealey Avenue. Two fire appliances arrived about 9.30 p.m. and left soon after 11 p.m. Neither fire had suspicious circumstances said the spokesman.
