Sick kiwi nursed
A Great Spotted kiwi is being nursed at Orana Wildlife Park after being flown to Christchurch from Nelson yesterday. The sick kiwi was found on the Heaphy Track by a tramper last week. It was treated initially by a veterinarian in Nelson and then flown to Christchurch by the Wildlife Service. Orana Park has the only rehabilitation centre in the South Island for kiwis.
The extent and cause of
the kiwi’s ill health had not been established yesterday but its weight indicated that it was quite sick, said the park’s director, Mr Paul Garland, yesterday.
Mr Garland believed it was the only Great Spotted kiwi in captivity in the South Island. It was not an endangered species but was “relatively uncommon,” he said.
The species is found only in the West Coast and Nelson districts.
