N.Z. second in golf

NZPA-AAP Kooralbyn, Queensland The Brisbane golfer, Corinne Dibnah, shrugged off the blustery conditions and a late challenge by the newcomers, New Zealand, to steer Australia to a twoshot first day lead in the nine-nation Queen Sirikit Cup international yesterday. The young Pacific Club champion was one of the few players to come to terms with the testing conditions, shooting a round of 75.

Her round gave Australia (154) a two-shot edge over New Zealand (156) with Japan close on 158. Much of the praise belonged to the Kiwis who refused to let Australia slip away on its home soil.

The former New Zealand champion, Brenda Rhodes, played a leading hand in the fight-back with a disciplined round of 77, while Jan Arnold chipped in with a round of 79. Australia, New Zealand and Japan have pulled away from the field, with a margin of 16 shots to Singapore and the Philippines together on 170 — two shots ahead of Thailand on 172. Indonesia is next on 175, with India and Malaysia in last position on 179. Australia is defending the Queen Sirikit Cup for the third year after winning the trophy in 1981. New Zealand is competing for the first time.

The 54-hole tournament ends tomorrow.
