Drill ‘reassuring’

PA Timaru Hydrocarbon traces have been found in the deep wildcat well being drilled off the coast of South Canterbury. Mr Kelly Griffiths, spokesman for the drilling consortium, BP Shell Todd — all unlisted companies — said yesterday that traces had been found in the well that was now down to 4300 m. Its programmed depth is 4925 m. Mr Griffiths described the traces as reassuring but

said that the finds were expected. Little drilling had been done by the Benreoch rig during the last few days as it is understood that core samples have been taken for geologists to investigate. Drilling cannot proceed immediately as a drill pipe has been lost down the hole. It is not known how long it will take to retrieve the pipe. The well is being drilled on the Clipper prospect, 80km south-east of Timaru.
