Bidston Hill in fine gallop at Awapuni

Special correspondent Palmerston North

Bidston Hill showed that he has trained on the right way since Trentham when he ran a fine gallop at Awapuni yesterday morning. No less impressive was his improving stablemate, Tredici, and these two give the trainer, Noel Eales, a strong hand in the Foxton Fries Cup. Working on the inside trail, where the going was nearly firm, Bidston Hill had the edge on Trusttum at the end of 1200 m in 1:17.6, the last 600 m in 37.65. It was a top effort by Bidston Hill, which is holding his form well. Trusttum makes a fresh start in the Oroua Downs Handicap. Tredici and Cuchulainn ran keenly over 1200 m in 1:16.4, the last 600 m in 38.4 s and the time was even faster than Bidston Hill’s. Tredici looks better for his race at Marton and, although another run will further improve him. his past record at Foxton will be respected in the cup. Any rain before the week-end would help him though the weather seems very settled. Cuchulainn races at Hawera next week.

Go Mamma and Lomondy did well to run 1000 m in 1:3, the last 600 m in 38s. Both show promise and Lomondy could race at Hawera next week. Manchu and Custom were in fine form running 1000 m in 1:2.4. The Foxton course will suit Custortj which

could be a definite prospect in the Clough Handicap. Boulder Bay and Regal Power ran 1000 m in 1:3, the last 600 m in 38s, and Nukumai went hard and impressively over 1400 m in 1:31.5, the last 600 m in 40s. He makes his hurdles debut at Foxton. He has gone well in training sessions and is not without a winning chance first up. Freedom Hunter, which has been disappointing on race day, was timed 800 m in 50s, the last 600 m in 375, and this was a good gallop.

Izitfun was better than Waldo Pepper at the end of 1400 m in 1:33.4, the last 600 m in 38.45. Izitfun is in grand fettle for the Pat Lynch Handicap. She won by five lengths in maiden grade at Feilding last month.

War Drums and Royal Mint left 1000 m behind in 1:4, the last 600 m in 395. Royal Mint makes his debut in the trial maiden at Foxton.

So Royal and C-aimoss sprinted from the 800 m but could not be timed from there because of fog. They took 38s for the last 600 m and Gaimoss is improving. Cinaro left 1200 m behind in 1:20 but he would need to improve on his last-start showing to have a chance at Foxton. He was a surprise winner on the course 12 months ago.

Baraden ran the last 600 m of his work in 38.5 s and went freely. He has improved lately and is in with a chance in the hurdles

at Foxton. On the plough Super Tai reeled off 1200 m in 1:17, the final 400 m in 275. He is thriving and if he races at Foxton he will carry only 52.5 kg in the Clough Handicap with the apprentice, Eddie Lamb, up. But there is a chance he could go to Te Rapa for the Travel Centre Stakes if a suitable rider can be obtained. Thrust covered 1000 m in 1:6.4, the final 600 m in 38.85. He would not be without a chance in the sprint at Foxton on his last-start showing at the Marton meeting.

Pleading ran an easy 800 m, the last 600 m in 395. She has freshened nicely since Easter and will be hard to catch in the Clough Handicap at Foxton. Hine Pango was timed from the 600 m in 40s and Koiro Bel Trelay ran 1400 m in 1:34, the last 600 m in 40s. Court Jester left 1000 m behind in 1:7.4, the last 600 m in 40s, and Taipeh was timed 800 m in 555, the last 600 m in 40s.

Rye and Valiant Ashton were well matched over 1400 metres in 1:32, the last 600 m in 40s. Rye ran a good race at Te Rapa last week and should be kept on side for the Oroua Downs Handicap. Valiant Ashton is in good order for a fresh start tomorrow.

Head Shepherd, which comes back to flat racing tomorrow after a good race in his hurdles debut at Marton, covered 1200 m in 1:20.6, the last 600 m in 39&.
