‘Second string’ is stable hope
Pokare is an unlikely runner in the Hororata Racing Club’s Whitecliffs Handicap at Riccarton tomorrow, but the Michael Pitman stable is still left with a strong form runner in Famillion.
When the stablemates met at the Amberley meeting Pokare was an easy winner, but Famillion impressed with the determination of his finishing run for second. Famillion was withdrawn from the two-year-old race at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Wednesday, but there is nothing wrong with him. He sprinted attractively in training on a firm No. 1
grass at Riccarton yesterday, joining Silver Agent and a King’s Palace-Semi Sweet colt to speed over 600 m in 35.4.
Later Nearco Park and * Divine Flo, rival candidates for the Spring Maiden, also performed at speed over 600 m, finishing on terms in 35.25.
Charles Beaufort and Handsome Heir, two of the top fancies for the feature race tomorrow, performed well in solo tasks a few minutes apart.
Charles Beaufort ran home from the 800 m in 48.85. Handsome Heir started at the 1200 m, and also came up with 48.8 s for his final 800 m.
