Old rivalries renewed at Riccarton tomorrow

By

J. J. BOYLE

Charles Beaufort and Handsome Heir will renew old rivalries in the Hawkins, first leg of the Hororata Racing Club’s T.A.B. double at Riccarton tomorrow.

They were thrown into competition right at the front end of the season, and have had some doughty battles since, reaching a level of form that will make them two of the obvious chances in the 2000 m feature race tomorrow.

Charles Beaufort came out on top in early-season tussles, on his way towards assembling a sequence of six wins. But Handsome Heir,

which had been fifth behind him in the Longbeach Handicap at Riccarton in August, third in the Ashburton Cup and fifth again in the Banks Peninsula Cup, has won back several points this autumn. Handsome Heir beat Charles Beaufort into second in the Rangiora Handicap at the North Canterbury meeting on April 16 and again in the Amberley Cup last Saturday.

Now for the first time this year they are to meet at level weights. Handsome Heir had a pull of I.skg when he beat Charles Beaufort by two comfortable lengths in the Amberley Cup last Saturday. The turnaround in the weights should do something towards helping Charles Beaufort break through for his first win this time around, but Handsome Heir, at the impressive level of performance he reached last week, will be hard to keep out. Unless Top Blend is allowed to steal away to an unassailable lead, the main opposition for Charles Beaufort and Handsome Heir could come from Noble Jewel. That seventh by Noble Jewel at 1600 m on Wednesday was nothing to enthuse over, even if he struck a traffic problem. But the Wingatui chestnut has performed notable deeds over Riccarton’s 2000 m distance, one of them to dead-heat in a 3ZB Classic, another to run into a place behind Commissionaire in the Canterbury Cup. Paddle, winner of the Riverton Cup at Easter, might need another heavy track to leave his stamp on this race. On firmer footing he finished fourth after having every chance against lesser lights on Wednesday. Pronto King should bring a youthful talent to bear on the outcome of the Selwyn Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. This Riccarton-trained Dunedin Guineas winner will be having his second start on his present campaign. He resumed with a fifth over 1200 m at Riccarton on April 28, that being his first start since the Southland Guineas on January 7 when he finished second to Gaffa but was relegated to fourth. When tried over more ground in the Waikouaiti club’s Blue Riband earlier in January Pronto King dead-heated with Gaffa for third. The main strength of opposition for Pronto King should come from Rebel Star and Blyme. Blyme gave John Dowling some steerng problems before he won at Riccarton on Wednesday, but the Wingatui horseman met the problem effectively by changing the whip to his left hand, and the four-year old buried the others for finishing speed. Rebel Star looked close to winning when second to the nippy Omoto Lass over 1400 m at the Marlborough meeting. Jbt: 4 Tab: CY Race 1 11.5 WAIREKA BRUSH HURDLES
