Broodmare sold for $ll,000
By JEFF SCOTT The C2 pacer, Star Spangled, with a positive test to the successful sire, Smooth Fella, easily fetched the top price at a Wrightson Bloodstock unreserved dispersal sale in Christchurch yesterday. Offered on account of Mr Dick Petrie of Rangiora, Star Spangled, a five-year-old mare by Armbro Hurricane from Scottish Spangle, by Scottish Command, was knocked down to Western Bloodstock, a South Islandbased syndicate for $ll,OOO. Buying was generally slow with 35 lots selling for
$31,450, an average of $899. However, 13 of these were repurchased by their vendors. The second highest price was $4OOO for the Americanbred broodmare, Tina Rainbow, with a positive test to Mark Lobell. Offered on account of Messrs M. and R. Ruman, the 19-year-old daughter of Adios from a Tar Heel mare, was sold to Mr John Tweedie, of Victoria. The C 3 trotter, Black Barry, offered on account of Mr A. W. Dykman, was sold to Mr G. D. Peters, of Christchurch, for a paltry $5OO. Other racehorses put up for auction were the Cl pacers, Timely Princess, which was sold for $900; and Manuel, which was returned to the vendors for $5OO. Other purchases of $lOOO or more were for the two-year-olds: Lord Patch (Lordship—Our Grace colt) for $1200; and Sea King (Out to Win—Jessie Jo gelding) for $lOOO.
