Musterers, packmen gather for reunion
A reunion of musterers and packmen who worked in the hill and high country before 1966, will be held at Timaru next month. The organisers hope that 500 people will attend the reunion on June 8 to 10. A previous reunion held in 1950 attracted 630.
Plenty of time has been set aside during the weekend for Blusterers to talk about old times and meet old workmates. Official activities include a buffet dinner and dance on Saturday and a church service the next day. Plans are afoot to print a book containing old time stories from musterers and
a history of the main high country stations in the South Island. Proceeds from the book would be invested in a Bursary Trust Account which would provide funds for training young people from the hill and high country as well as for research work.
A committee to run the account is being formed. It is hoped the book will be ready in 12 months. Anecdotes from former musterers are being recorded on tape in preparation for the book. People wishing to attend the reunion can get in tonch with the organisers by writing to P.O. Box 194, Timaru.
