Man badly burnt in flat fire
PA Auckland A man was critically ill in Auckland Hospital last evening after being rescued from his burning Ponsonby flat. The fire gutted the unit where Edward Victor Beard, aged 64, lives alone. He was found lying near the back door, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Ambulance officers gave Mr Beard oxygen before taking him to hospital. The Auckland police said the fire brigade was alerted when neighbours saw smoke pouring from the flat, one of 22 pensioner units, about 1.20 p.m. Firemen wearing breathing apparatus took only a few minutes to put out'the blaze. The fire was believed to have started in the kitchen, possibly in the oven.
