Line-out pair hold key

NZPA-AAP Brisbane Queensland knows it needs to contain Auckland’s champion line-out leapers, Andy Haden and Gary Whetton, if it is to upset Auckland at Ballymore Oval tomorrow. The Queensland coach, Mr Bob Templeton, said yesterday that Haden and Whetton were two of the finest locks in the world and a bonus to any team.

Mr Templeton’s high opinion of the pair was unshaken after watching Auckland down Sydney, 21-9, in Auckland last week-end to take the Trans-Tasman Cup. Queensland has not escaped the might of New Zealand rugby power, it was humbled, 33-9, by the Ranfurly Shield Champion, Canterbury in Christchurch last Sunday. But the Auckland coach, Mr John Hart, has thrown

the form guide out the window and is approaching tomorrow’s clash with Queensland as a totally new ball game. “We were beaten by a similar score by Canterbury last year and Queensland will be well prepared after their three-match tour of New Zealand,” he said, adding: “They are always hard to beat on their home track and we won’t be taking them lightly, you can count on that.”
