Lord’s Prayer changed
Anglicans will have to get used to a slightly revised version of the Lord’s Prayer. The change, approved by the General Synod in Christchurch yesterday, would ensure the Church used a more universal text of the prayer, members heard. The Bishop of Waiapu, the Right Rev. P. G. Atkins, who recommended the proposal, said: “This will bring us closer in line of worship with other churches.”
The line, “Bring us not to
the test,” has been changed to “Save us from the time of trial.” The former was a revision of the original “Lead us not into temptation,” adopted by the Church in New Zealand in 1970.
The latest change brings the Lord’s Prayer into accordance with the version adopted by the International Commission on English Texts, an ecumenical body of international theologians and translators, in 1975.
The proposal was well debated. The Venerable B. E. Wil-
kinson, of the Dunedin Diocese, said constant revisions of the Lord’s Prayer upset many of his parishioners. “My plea is that you leave it alone,” he said. The Venerable M. R. Smart, of the Waiapu Diocese, supported the proposal. He said his parishioners were frequently confused by the line, “Bring us not to the test.” “I found connotations of rugby tests in the middle of the Lord’s Prayer,” he said. Sexist language, page 3
