Container trade boom continues

The container terminal at Cashin Quay continues to record good trading figures, having exchanged 13,000 containers for the six months to the end of March. The terminal’s manager, Mr Bill Siddall, said April had been the third consecutive good trading month, and had brought the terminal back on budget for ship exchange volumes for the half-yearly period. Revenue, however, was down 4 per cent for the year to date, mainly from shortfalls in reefer (refrigerated) and wash revenue, he said. The continuance of good support from the Tasman and Japanese services was expected to counter an expected drop last month in the U.K.European trade, Mr Siddall said. About 3100 containers were exchanged during March, well over the budget figure of 2059. Total container movement for the month was 3837, with 620 containers washed. Twenty-one vessels called at the terminal during March and early April, with the Tolaga Bay exchanging the greatest number of containers (819). Forum New Zealand achieved the best handling rate, exchanging 27.2 containers an hour. Japanese and Tasman service vessels accounted for 25 per cent of the monthly volume. Mr Siddall said figures for the U.K.-Europe trade to date were showing good improvements. ARRIVALS Toyo Fuji No. 8 (6 a.m.), 9000," Melbourne (S.C.N.Z.).
