Tanker fire ‘under control’

NZPA-Reuter Singapore The fire on board a laden Saudi oil tanker hit by a missile in the Gulf had been brought under control, a salvage company said in Singapore. The Singapore-based Selco Salvage Company said that it had won the rights to salvage the 117,710-ton Saudi-registered al-Ahood,

which -was hit by a missile 130 km south-east of Iran’s Kharg Island oil terminal. A senior executive of Selco said that the engine room of the stricken vessel had been flooded and that the ship appeared to be in no immediate danger of sinking. It was too early to judge the vessel’s condition. “The weather is also bad

in the area with strong winds, heavy swells and rough seas,” he said. One crewman was killed and the rest were taken on by a Greek ship. He said that one of Selco’s salvage vessels had reached the scene and that the master had managed to board the al-Ahood. “A survey of the vessel is now in progress,” he said.
