King visits Moscow

NZPA-Reuter Moscow King Juan Carlos of Spain was arriving in the Soviet Union today for a visit that sets the seal on ties reestablished affter the death of the Right-wing dictator, Francisco Franco, in 1975. For more than three decades after the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War Moscow and Madrid had no diplomatic relations, regarding each other’s governments as symbolising abhorrent politiical systems. The King, only the fourth West European monarch to visit Moscow under a Soviet Government, will confer with the Soviet President,

Mr Konstantin Chernenko, and tour Tashkent, Samarkand, and Leningrad over the next six days. The visit is officially ceremonial, in keeping with the King’s Constitutional role, but it is being seen in the context of increasing contacts between the Kremlin and European leaders. The Spanish Foreign Minister, Mr Fernando Moran, will meet his Soviet counterpart, Mr Andrei Gromyko during the visit. It coincides with EastWest relations coming under a new strain with the announcement of a Soviet Olympic boycott.
