Women’s issues to fore

The growing strength of women in the federation was evident in the nature of the remits passed by the federation’s conference.

With women making up more than 40 per cent of the workforce, and a number of big unions dominated by women, delegates to the conference were more vocal on women’s issues than previously and had voting strength to back them up.

A resolution “that the federation continue to take affirmative action on the appointment of mediators and conciliators,” was adopted. Another resolution was passed asking the federation to encourage women into delegate, executive and union official positions, and boosting the resources of the women’s advisory committee of the F.O.L. Women contributed a substantial slice of federation resources, and some of these resources needed to be returned to women members, said Ms J. Reid, of the Shop Employees’ Association.
