N.Z. to lift ban on Aust, goats

PA Wellington Proposals have been drafted which would allow Australia to export goats to New Zealand, said the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Maclntyre, yesterday. Tasmania would probably be the first state to set up the necessary veterinary certification procedures, he said. “Initially importations will be restricted to animals, but we could assume that in time semen and embryos would also be allowed,” Mr Maclntyre said in a speech at the opening of a mohair producers’ warehouse at Pukekohe.

New Zealand does not allow importation of goats from Australia because of possible disease problems, the Minister said. “We have been working on ways to resolve this difficulty, and have submitted draft proposals to the federal veterinary authorities in Canberra.” The problem was a disease called contagious arthritis-encephalitis which was present in Australia but not in New Zealand. “We would require goats to be imported from flocks accredited free of the disease,” said Mr MacIntyre.
