S.I. has badminton loss

The touring South Island badminton team pushed the North Shore side hard in the latest match of its North Island tour before going down, 9-7, on Wednesday evening. There was particular reason for the southern players to be happy with their singles form. They won five of the eight individual matches but fell down when the doubles contests began.

North Shore was weakened by the absence through injury of the country’s No. 2 ranked player, Phil Horne. In its opening match, the South Island had a convincing 15-1 win over Counties.

The only South Islander to lose was Alison Ross, who went down to Karen Phillips, the third-ranked player in New Zealand, in three games. North Shore 9, South Island 7 Singles.—K. Harrison beat P. Skelt, 16-18, 8-15; Lester and Harrison beat Lindsay and S. Tetai, 15-11, 10-15, 15-8. Women’s doubles.—Miss Persson and Mrs Lockey beat Miss Ross and Miss Clarke, 15-3, 15-4; Miss MacFarlane and Miss Newton beat Miss Hellyer and Miss Still, 15-11, 15-11.

Mixed doubles.—Harrison and Miss Persson beat N. Skelt and Miss Clarke, 15-4, 15-10; Kelly and Miss Newton beat P. Skelt and Miss Ross, 5-15, 15-6, 15-11; Atkinson and Miss MacFarlane beat Lindsay and Miss Hellyer, 11-15, 15-8, 15-3; Lester and Mrs Lockey lost to Gulasekharam and Miss Still, 11-15, 9-15.
