National squash week
The sport of squash rackets will come before the public eye next week when most of New Zealand’s 243 clubs are expected to take part in a national squash week. The squash week, which will last from May 14 to 20, has been launched by the New Zealand Squash Rackets Association.
To mark national squash week many New Zealand clubs will be holding open
days, special club nights, “ladies’ mornings,” school promotions and even squash exhibitions and squash-a-thons, open to the public. Next Thursday, the new British Open women’s champion, Susan Devoy is expected to meet a member of the New Zealand Olympic rowing team in a celebrity match at the Hamilton Marist Squash Club. Another match is scheduled at the Franklin club in Pukekohe
between the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, and the All Black captain, Andy Dalton. The Canterbury Squash Rackets Association is still keen to hold a celebrity match in Christchurch next week, though it appears that plans have fallen through for a contest between the radio announcer, George Balani, a former division one player, and the members of the Canterbury Ranfurly Shield team.
