Beready tops in training at Hastings
Special correspondent Hastings
Beready worked as well as any in training at Hastings yesterday morning but there is no guarantee he will take his place in tomorrow’s Edward Lumley Handicap at Trentham. His trainer Marlene Todd, is concerned about the amount of rain that has fallen in the Wellington area in the last few days and said yesterday morning that Beready would not start if the track was too wet.
Beready is only at his best on firm tracks and Mrs Todd said the horse will probably go out for a winter spell after tomorrow. Fast work yesterday morning was done on the plough (firm) and No. 1 grass (easy). Beready worked on his own on the No 1 grass, running 800 m in 51s, the last 600 strongly in 375. The apprentice, Peter Fearon, will ride Beready if he starts at Trentham.
Rich Rogue, preparing for the Wilton Handicap at Trentham, worked with a stablemate, Now Lass, over 1000, on the plough, the last 600 taking 38s. Rich Rogue is one horse which will not mind if the Trentham track is wet.
Time Honours yesterday morning went to Loredo and In Off, which sprinted 600 m
on the plough in a fast 35.85. They are in the Rose Dur-rant-Jill Martin stable.
Master Blaster, another member of the DurrantMartin team, will not take his place in the Wilton Handicap at Trentham. The six-year-old has a slight blood disorder.
Loughmore rounded off her preparation for the Johnsonville Handicap by working strongly alongside Dash over 800 m in 51.15, the last 600 in 37.95.
The apprentice, Peter Ayres, has been booked to ride both of the Sellwood trained runners at Trentham — Loughmore and Beks — providing he is fit. Ayres took a heavy fall from Trade Fair in the last race at Wednesday’s Marton meeting and has a swollen ankle. It is hoped that the swelling will go down in the next 24 hours. Ayres has also been engaged for, Marina Del Ray and Crucible at Trentham. Alcazar worked over 1200 m on the plough in lmin 14.65, the last 600 in 37.65. He looks well and any rain will enhance his chances for the Wilton Handicap at Wellington. Brian Hibberd will again have the mount. Some Bird did well to cut out a solo 600 m in 375. She is another which looks particularly well at the moment.
