Team for farm skills contest

The team from New Zealand selected to compete in the Farm Skills International Pentathlon at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland next month, has been named. The five member team was chosen following the New Zealand Stock and Station Agents Association’s farm skills pentathlon final held at the Auckland Easter Show.

It will comprise Murray Douglas of Titoki, near Whangarei, captain of the Northern Districts regional team in the final; Barry Wilton of Pahiatua, a member of the East Coast regional team; Tony Prestage and Warren Darling, from Albury and Kingsdown (respectively), near Timaru, members of the Aorangi regional team; and Mrs Shona Stewart of Aparima, near Invercargill, a member of the Otago/Southland regional team. The general manager of the Stock and Station Agents Association, Mr John Malyon said: “With the enthusiasm and professionalism of New Zealand farming, we are certain that we are being excellently represented and look forward with confidence to the

final.” Placed first as a team at the Easter show was the Otago/Southland regional team. Its members were: Jeffrey McKenzie and Alan Edwards both of Heriot, John Kerse, of Gore, Shona Stewart of Aparima and Andrew Taylor of Wyndham. Second in the final was the team from the East Coast, and third, the Northern Districts team. Unplaced were Wellington, South Auckland, Aorangi and Tasman. The skills which have been tested at each stage of the competition are crop recognition, sheep shearing, livestock assessment, fencing and tractor driving. District eliminations at A. and P. Shows produced seven district teams of five members to compete in the finals. Each member of the team had to compete in two of the five skill phases.

The Farm Skills Pentathlon, in which the New Zealand team will compete, is part of the bicentennial celebrations of the Royal Highland Show. At least eight teams from the Royal Agricultural Societies of the Commonwealth will compete?'from June 17 to 21.
