SIDELINES
THE FIVE-STROKE victory by Tom Watson in the Tournament of Champions event in Carlsbad, California earlier this week moved him to first place on the United States golf tour’s money list for this year. His win enabled him to overtake the “find” of the tour, Fred Couples. The top 10 in earnings, all from the United States, are: Watson, $U5284,468, 1; Couples, $259,953, 2; Gary Koch, $217,978, 3; Ben Crenshaw, $209,264, 4; Bruce Lietzke, 207,000, 5; Andy Bean, $195,419, 6; Jack Renner, $191,589, 7; Tom Kite, $189,596, 8; Gil Morgan, $179,697, 9; Corey Pavin, $175,545, 10. MCKEE NELSON UNITED has not had a happy start to its Rothmans Soccer League campaign. In last week-end’s opening round, Nelson conceded an own goal in the dying seconds to lose, 3-2, to Mount Wellington, after having led, 2-0. To make matters worse, the player who gave away the own goal, Kenny Drakeford, was shown the red card by the referee as the players were leaving the field, and earlier his team-mate, Charlie Juffs, was also sent off. With Manurewa’s goal-keeper, Rudi Feitsma, also being ordered off in the ill-tempered game against Napier City Rovers, the number of players dismissed in the 14 seasons — and one round — of the national competition has risen to 73. ACHIEVING HEADLINES for a major feat and then having your name spelt incorrectly is something of an injustice. It has happened more than once this week to the Belfast rugby player, Brent Hutchinson, who last Saturday set a new individual record of 30 points in a senior game. Up to now his surname in “The Press” has been Hutchison. He is the son of John Hutchinson, who was a handy rugby and cricket player for Marist and St Albans respectively in the 19505. An uncle, Peter Hutchinson, was even more prominent as a rugby player, representing Canterbury Southland and New Zealand Universities at about the same time.
