Manurewa in trouble
PA Auckland Manurewa has had a nightmare start to the defence of their national soccer league title. Without its new captain, Steve Sumner, because of injury from the first game of the season, the club’s woes have compounded. Keith Garland missed the first Rothmans League game in Napier last Sunday following his ordering-off earlier in the week in the Challenge Trophy clash with Mt Wellington. Now Manurewa faces the prospect of playing its second game away to Gisborne City on Sunday without its international goal-keeper, Rudi Feitsma. Feitsma was ordered off after an incident immediately after last Sunday’s drawn game with Napier City Rovers. He is automatically liable to a one-week suspension but the club last night confirmed it
would be appealing to the Franklin and Districts Association in the hope of having the penalty revoked. Earlier in the game, Manurewa’s stand-in captain, Dave Bright, had been booked following a controversy surrounding the scoring of Napier’s second goal. Then the former Napier player, Kevin Hagan, now with Manurewa, was booked and also involved in an incident at half-time, which was later the subject of a complaint to the police. As a safeguard against being without Feitsma for Sunday’s fame, the coach, Mr Maurice illotson, unsuccessfully approached the former New Zealand goal-keeper, Sandy Davie. Later he was to speak to the former Ellerslie goal-keeper, Brian Reeves, as another possible cover. Reeves was Rangers’ goal-keeper in 1981, when they were in the national league.
