Viggers, Oakley top squash seeds
Paul Viggers (Sumner), now the top-ranked New Zealand men’s resident squash player, and Jillian Oakley (Mitchell Park, Wellington) head the seedings for the $3OOO Midlands championships at Ashburton this week-end. The grade two tournament is the second qualifying event on the $36,000 Adidas championship circuit and has more prize money than any other tournament in the South Island this season, including the Canterbury championships and the South Island championships, which both have stakes of $2OOO. Viggers, the fifth-ranked man in New Zealand last season, has been promoted to No. 3 on the latest list released, with only the full-
time professionals, Stuart Davenport and Ross Norman, both based in Britain, now ahead of him. Next on the list at No. 4 is Danny McQueen (Geyser City, Rotorua), who has already won the New Zealand under-23 title and the Waikato championships this season and who will also be playing at Ashburton this week-end. He is seeded to meet Viggers in the final. Also seeded for the Midlands tournament are John Mills (Khandallah, Wellington), now ranked No. 9 on the national list, and Craig Hibbert (Linwood). Carolyn Viggers (Christchurch Football) is the No. 2 women’s seed, with Pam Dodderell (Thames) seeded third and Freda Walker (Linwood) fourth.
