Hooper beats Olympian
Garry Hooper, the recently retired Canterbury and South Island rugby wing, showed that he had lost little of his fitness and running abiity on Sunday morning. Hooper withstood a storming finish from the New Zealand Olympic Games steeplechase representative, Peter Renner, to win the Radio Avon celebrity mile at the opening of the new Total Fitness complex in Manchester Street The race was run on the 160 m indoor track on the second floor, under handicap conditions, and Hooper did well to hold off the very fit Renner, in spite of having a
30s start on the Games runner. Renner, who did a very smart 4min 6s, admitted to being very impressed with the track, and haa a corrected time of 4min 345. The former Olympic Games hockey gold medallist, Selwyn Maister, was third in 4min 48s; Sheldon Murtha, a Radio Avon disc jockey, was fourth in smin 14s, the same time as Lesley Murdoch, an international in women’s hockey and cricket The other contestants, in finishing order, were: Leigh Gibbs (netball), Nicki Turner (cricket), Fergie McCormick, (rugby) and Bruce Drury (bowls).
