Australian metals down

NZPA Sydney Prices fell on Australian stock exchanges yesterday because of the stronger United Staes dollar and fears of higher interest rates. Metal stocks were the worst hit, because the impact of these moves on the world metal markets. At 3 p.m. the all-ordinaries was down 4.4 points at 750.8, with the all industrials down 1.9 points at 998.5, and the all resources down 6.1 points at 554.8. BHP fell 15c to 11.15 and CSR lost 2c to 3.70. Major metals to lose were MIM, 8c to 332, WMC, 7c 405, CRA 4c to 590, and Bouganville, 3c to 242. Gold stocks weakened with the physical price. Emperor fell 15c to 395 and Central Norseman lost 10c to 550. Uranium issues were mixed, with Pancontinental up 3c to 146 and ERA down 2c at 140. Against the trend, Aberfoyle rose 10c to 670 and EZ at 546 and Peko 500 rose 6c.

The absence ot hydrocarbons from the Chimaera One well in Bass Strait was linked to Crusader’s falling 15c to 280. Santos fell 10c to 660 while Vamgas, at 330 and Bridge, at 280, were down sc. Banks closed firmer with Westpac up 3c at 390. Retailers were generally weaker with Coles down 7c at 378. Fairfax rose 6c to 560 in an otherwise steady media sector. Rothmans did not trade on news of the company reconstruction, but buyers were bidding 900, a 30c rise.
