Computer speeds tape hire service

From this week, the video tape hire service at Noel Leeming’s will become a speedy operation. The service has been computerised, with the use of a bar-coded wanding device (pictured above). When video library mem-

bers present their card with the tapes they wish to hire, or return, assistants simply activate the control (top), and pass the wand (left) over the member’s barcoded card (below) then over the bar-coded tape. All the information required to

keep track of the rental or return is immediately recorded in the central computer. This new system is expected to be a'decided asset to the 3000-plus video library members and staff. The former manual system of recording rental trans-

actions had become unwieldy, particularly on Friday nights and Monday mornings. At those times, up to 1300 people had a long wait to hire or return their week-end video tapes. The new system includes a computer telephone link with the firm’s other South Island branches.
