South African wine

Sir, — Hallucinations are no substitute for facts. W. Squires (May 2) appears to have been misled. A personal visit to Stellenbosch Farmers Winery eight months ago and free discussion with staff, management and directors, confirmed that the company employs 5000 blacks. The average wage is R 7200 a year and promotion is on merit alone. All workers are united in the registered, non-affiliated Wine and Spirit Workers’ Union, which oper-

ates nation wide. Unionists maintain that their best prospects lie in the growth of the company, based on increased productivity. In the last two consecutive years a 25 per cent wage rise has been negotiated by the union. Staff with three years service cannot be sacked without a director’s approval. Approximately R 1 million is set aside annually for manual-staff welfare. It is rubbish to claim that blacks are paid in wine instead of money. It is inhuman to make false claims about the treatment of blacks for political purposes. — Yours, etc., BERT WALKER. May 2, 1984.
