Clover seed losses

Bad weather during the recent harvest has had a detrimental affect on the quality of white clover seed, Mr Bill Whelan, president of the North Canterbury Agricultural Merchants, has said. Farmers should be aware that machine dressing losses were considerably higher than in a normal year, he said. This was due to the large content of earth particles, sprouted and shrivelled seed and unthreshed clover cob. One merchant has advised

that the average loss of 20 lines of seed processed was 30 per cent this year compared with about 20 per cent in a normal year. Also, it was envisaged that this picture would deteriorate further as later harvested crops were handled. Merchants would always welcome a visit at the dressing plant if a farmer client wished to observe his line of seed being machine cleaned, Mr Whelan added. Farmers should also keep in contact with their local seed traveller.
