Shipping news Decrease in March tonnage
Tonnage handled through Lyttelton in March was down compared with the corresponding period last year, although tonnage for the year to date still shows an increase.
The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said in his report to the trade and commercial development committee that the main items to show a decrease were petroleum products, fertilisers and manures.
About 205,500 tonnes of cargo was handled during
March, a decrease of more than 36,000 tonnes compared with March, 1983.
The accumulated tonnage for the year beginning last October had shown an increase of 19 per cent, Mr Morgan said.
Conventional cargo handled in the inner harbour continued to show a decline, he said. The decrease in dry bulk fertiliser handled at the port was directly linked with the rural economic scene which was expected to show modest growth during the year. Mr Morgan said the increase of containers handled through the No. 3 berth at Cashin Quay reflected the strong growth of the container terminal. Commodities to show the greatest increase were nonspecified goods, up 109,544 tonnes, and motor vehicles, up 97,869 tonnes.
Petroleum products recorded the greatest decrease from last year, down 44,643 tonnes.
Coastal traffic, particularly roll-on. roll-off servicing Auck-
land, Wellington, and Dunedin, continues to grow steadily, showing an increase of more than 294,700 tonnes. ARRIVALS Lindnes (8.30 a.m.), 27,798, Australia (Scales).
