Officer’s claims probed

NZPA-AP Belfast The Director of Public Prosecutions is investigating allegations that British Intelligence officers in Northern Ireland assassinated, kidnapped, and sabotaged in their fight against republican guerrillas. A former Military Intelligence officer, Captain Fred Holdroyd, who served in Northern Ireland from 1974 to 1975, has given the Royal Ulster Constabulary a detailed account of the allegations, including documents and photographs. A constabulary spokeswoman said that the R.U.C. had investigated the allegations and given a report to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who would now'conduct his own inves-

tigation. Captain Holdroyd’s allegations were the subject of a documentary on Independent Television yesterday and were to be published today in the “New Statesman” magazine. In the magazine article Captain Holdroyd alleged that Captain Robert Nairac, a member of Britain’s Special Air Service, had crossed into the Irish Republic with two other men in January, 1975, and shot dead a commander of the Irish Republican Army. Captain Nairac, aged 29, was tortured and killed by the I.R.A. in 1977 after being detected while on an undercover mission near the border. He was posthumously a warded the George Cross for valour.
