Petition plea

NZPA-AAP Canberra More than 120,000 signatures on petitions calling for a Royal Commission into the Chamberlain case were displayed in Canberra yesterday, at a public meeting before being taken to the Governor-General by the Plea for Justice Committee Lynne Chamberlain was convicted in October, 1982, of killing her baby, Azaria, at Ayers Rock in August, 1980, and is now serving a life sentence in Berrimah Jail, Darwin. Her husband, Michael, was found guilty of being an accessary after the fact and placed on a threeyear good behaviour bond.

Since the unsuccessful appeal in the High Court of Australia, which was dismissed in February, supporters of the Chamberlains’ have begun a public campaign to overturn the verdict.

The Plea for Justice campaign believes that the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Ninian Stephen, has explicit power to exercise the Royal prerogative of mercy in the Northern Territory and grant a pardon to the Chamberlains.

The petition calls for a judicial inquiry into Mrs Chamberlain’s conviction and asks for her to be freed pending the outcome.
