Daimler sold

PA Auckland Waitemata City’s controversial Daimler limousine was sold by auction yesterday for $28,600 to a wedding car rental firm owner, Mr Trevor Fromont, who said he bought the car to add to his fleet. The Waitemata City Council bought the car last year for $33,000. It had been a New Zealand High Commission car in London. It became a controversial election campaign issue.

The previous Mayor, Mr Tony Covic, said he would use it only for official purposes. The successful Mayoral challenger, Mr Tim Shadbolt, promised to tow his concrete mixer — named Karl Marx — behind the Daimler if he won. He did both. Later he ferried the elderly, disabled, and underprivileged in it to Christmas functions. The council decided to sell the car earlier this year.
