Mr Cooper backed
NZPA-Reuter Bonn New Zealand’s Minister of Foreign and Overseas Trade, Mr Cooper, received strong support from West Germany yesterday during his hectic ten-nation tour aimed at protecting New Zealand butter exports to the European Economic Community. After a meeting between Mr Cooper and the West German Agricultural Minister, Ignaz Kiechle, the Min-
istry said that both men supported a proposal by the European Community’s Commission to scale down New Zealand butter exports from 83,000 to 75,000 tonnes a year between 1984 and 1988. The proposal is now blocked by Ireland where farmers are bitterly opposed to the recent Community agreement to reduce huge dairy surpluses by slashing milk production.
