Third M.W.D. man transferred

PA Dunedin The district civil engineer for the Ministry of Works and Development in Dunedin, Mr J. E. Walsh, will join two of his executive colleagues in their move north, after the State Services Commission inquiry into the Central Otago irrigation controversy. Mr Walsh said this week that he had received a letter of transfer saying he was to become the resident engineer for the Ministry in Nelson from June 11. The commission has preserved Mr Walsh’s present grading. “In my mind, naturally, this transfer in fact is a reduction in status, if you can use that word,” he said. “However, in light of the circumstances, I am accepting the transfer and will continue to maintain my loyalty to the department, and that is an unqualified commitment.” Mr Walsh was resident engineer in Alexandra for six years before being transferred to Dunedin two years ago. The former District Commissioner of Works in

Dunedin, Mr R. O. Bullen, and the water and soil engineer, Mr C. J. Reid, started commuting to Wellington in March while the Public Service Association took their case to the High Court. Their respective positions as inspecting engineer and water and soil engineer in the Wellington office have since been confirmed, after the outcome of the District Court case.
