New Forestry Council appointed

PA Wellington The newly-formed Forestry Council has been announced by the Minister of Forests, Mr Elworthy.

The 10-member council is.—

© Mr Harold Bunn, of Rotorua, the recently retired director of the production forestry division of the Forest Research Institute.

© Mr Barrie Downey, of Wellington, a former director of Tasman Pulp and Paper and head of the Fletcher Challenge forestry and wood products division. © Mr Tony Grayburn, of Auckland, an executive of Forest Products. © Mr Callum Kirkpatrick, of Havelock North, a previous council member and chartered accountant.

© Mr Keith Managh, of Thames, managing director of the Thames Sawmilling Company. ® Mr Jolyon Manning, chief executive of the Otago Council.

© Mr Richard Perham, of Wellington, president of the Timber Industry Federation and a director of Odlins, Ltd.

© Mr Michael Ponder, of Blenheim, president of the Marlborough Forest Owners’ Association.

© Mr Brian Wall, of Nelson, chief executive of H. Baigent and Sons and president of the Forest Owners’ Association.

© Mr Andrew Kirkland, the Director-General of Forests, is an ex-officio member.

Mr Kirkpatrick has been appointed chairman of the new body. Messrs Downey, Manning and Perham were all members of the old council.

The council had previously been an ad hoc advisory committee to the Government, Mr Elworthy said.

It was made a statutory body last year with the task of advising the Government and the industry on the medium to long-term development of forestry. He expected the council to start looking at a forestry development and marketing strategy which would assist forest growers and timber marketers in the future.
