Look Me Over best bet in Final

By

G. K. YULE

Look Me Over, the only double heat winner and the most tightly-assessed horse in the field, should make a bold bid to win the D.B. Export Lager Flying Fillies’ Series Final at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway tomorrow evening. This year’s field appears to lack the class of an Armalight, Hilarious Guest or Preferred, but for all that there are some promising fillies well capable of providing a thrilling encounter. Unfortunately four of the heat winners have had to miss the final because of injury, their number including the fastest qualifier, El Royette, which recorded 2min 1.4 s when she won at the Thames meeting on March 24, beating Arabesque and Lady Delwin. Look Me Over won in 2min 4.7 s at Cambridge on February 17, and she recorded 2min 2.8 s when successful on the same track on April 10. Since then the daughter of Vance Hanover has had one start, failing rather dismally at Claudelands last Friday. She has a big reputation and is expected to go well in this event in which she will be driven by Derek Jones. Blue Water has not been the most consistent filly in Canterbury, but her peak runs have been the equal of anything shown by any of the other contenders in this richly endowed event. She was runner-up to Sweet Alli at Blenheim on February 4, winning in 2min 3s at Addington six days later. She was runner-up to Smooth Hanna at Washdyke on April 7 at her latest start. She has drawn rather wide, but that might not stop her making a big showing. Sweet Alli has failed badly in her two latest starts, but she has been off colour and is only coming back to her best. The daughter of Noodlum has drawn fairly well and should be right in the thick of things from the start. Lucy Lumber, Lirelle and Elkedra could be as good as any of the others. Betting will cover a wide range in the second leg, the J. K. Davidson Stakes. Premiership, Freightman and Winning Note will be three of the better-sup-ported runners, but bold showings are expected from Soxygen, Bobanish, In Touch, Ruthless and Rapid Lustre.
