Dry April ‘favours’ Kaikoura
PA Wellington Last month was the driest April since 1970, and Kaikoura was the driest place in New Zealand; no measurable rain fell in the town during the month, according to the figures issued by the Meteorological Office. Rainfall for New Zealand as a whole was only 61 per cent of the average for April.
It was the fourth driest April since 1950, when comparable records began. Previous dry Aprils were: 1960, 47 per cent of normal; 1964, 52 per cent of normal; 1970, 60 per cent of normal. Not only was it the driest April in Kaikoura since comparable records, it was also the driest for any month of the year since records began. The previous driest month at Kaikoura was November, 1974, when 3mm was measured.
