Tax-free farming suggested
PA Invercargill A five-year moratorium on taxes for farmers has been called for by the chairman of Dalgety Crown, Ltd, Mr Rod Weir. Speaking at the annual conference of Federated Farmers (Southland) yesterday, Mr Weir said a moratorium would encourage farmers’ production levels. “We must face the fact the farm production has levelled out and in some areas has fallen,” he said. Mr Weir said that while farmers’ costs had gone down as inflation bad been checked during the price freeze, their income position had remained “most depressing.” The supplementary minimum price scheme was to be reviewed after 1385. Mr Weir said it should be replaced by incentives to reward production and efficiency on the farm.
