Rail history celebrated

Railway enthusiasts around New Zealand are organising activities to mark “Rail History Festival ’84,” which will begin on May 7.

The festival, which is being sponsored by the National Federation of Rail Societies, will run until May 18. More than 20 rail societies throughout New Zealand will participate, with some organising

special events to mark the occasion.

The Canterbury Steam Preservation Society will run its railway at McLeans Island on Sunday, May 13. A steam locomotive and passenger carriage will run on the bush tramway at the site.

The Ashburton Railway and Preservation Society will run three steam loco-

motives and a vulcan railcar for the festival on May 12 and 13. The society runs the Plains Museum in the Tinwald domain.

At Pleasant Point a train will be running and the museum will open from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on May 12 and 13. A large display shed has recently been completed there, and a turn table is being installed.
