Appeal to help disadvantaged

Socially disadvantaged young people in Christchurch will benefit from a street appeal being held for 6A Incorporated tomorrow. The voluntary organisation works with young people who are in trouble or at risk.

The appeal is being held specifically to help with the Caring Families programme run by 6A. This programme places young people, aged 13 to 18, with foster parents. “The young people placed through this scheme have generally had many unhappy experiences which make them distrustful and difficult to help,” said the fund-raising co-ordinator,

Ms Marion Sallis. In view of this, foster

parents were paid an extra allowance on top of the boarding fee paid by 6A. At the moment, no more young people could be placed with families under the scheme, as there were no more funds with which to pay the foster parents. Ms Sallis said 6A would appreciate any help with the street appeal tomorrow. Volunteers could go to the office at 192 Madras Street at any time from 8 a.m. tomorrow, she said. Volunteers need not help for the whole day, even half an hour would be a help, she said.
