PA Dunedin Big areas of Otago are expected to return to normal today after snow and high winds had closed roads and schools and caused power cuts. One of the worst-hit areas was west Otago, where some houses were without power for 24 hours and all' schools were closed. Around Tapanui the snowfall was called the heaviest since 1969. Snow reached a depth of 25cm

and last evening was 15cm deep around houses in the town. Two Dunedin hill suburb schools. Half Way Bush and Brockville, were closed yesterday. Schools in the Lawrence district were also closed. Overnight, State highway 87 between Outram and Middlemarch was closed. State highway 90 between Raes Junction and Tapanui was reopened at 1 p.m. after being closed yesterday morning.

About 11 trucks and trailer units were stranded on Tuesday night on Dunedin’s northern motorway. They were freed yesterday morning. Eight men were lifted by helicopter to an access point on the Mahinerangi Road after having to abandon their truck on Tuesday night. The eight spent the night in a farmhouse.
