Busy season ahead
Junior soccer in Canterbury is set for a busy year, both in coaching and in matches. Canterbury will host the New Zealand Junior Football Association under-16 tournament, which will be held at Warren Park, beginning on September 6. Canterbury Districts, a composition of the province’s country clubs, will hold the national division three under--14 tournament, at Kendall Park, in Kaiapoi, for a week starting on August 27. There will be visits from the region six teams, North Otago, South Canterbury and MidCanterbury, at under-11, under--12 and under-14 levels on the first three week-ends in July. The Otago under-13 and under-15 representative teams will have matches in Christchurch early in September, and four under-U regionallyselected teams from Tasmania will be playing in Christchurch during the first week of August.
The coaching of promising young players is being con-
ducted by the Canterbury Football Association’s coach, Terry Conley, at Christchurch Boys’ High School, with another venue soon to be added. A premier under-12 competition will begin in June. It will consist of two teams each from four zones.
It will be separate from the Saturday morning competitions. Sponsorship has been obtained from AMEV Life Insurance, enabling the C.J.F.A. to outfit the eight teams. The St Albans-Shirley twelfth grade team had a good win over Christchurch United at Elmwood Park last Saturday, 3-0. Michael Brooklands, Lindsay Bradley and Glen Bellam scored the goals. The pick of the United team were Mark Hammett, Mark Jansen and Grant Dewar.
Two Western ninth grade teams, the Hawks and the Eagles, both had wins. The Hawks beat Rangers, 4-0, while the Eagles edged out Technical, 2-1. Chris Donaldson scored twice for the Hawks, Philip
Meachen and Anthony Sinclair once each, while Patrick Thompson and Ryan Sperry kept up a steady supply of ball for the front-runners.
Jonathan Vick, in goal for Rangers, did a good job while Tristram Beckett and Bruce Gurlion toiled hard in defence.
Darren Thorpe and Colin Burt, the son of the Rothmans League referee, Neil Burt, scored early goals for the Eagles. Jeremy Cox and Jonathan Wright were the pick of a defence which kept Technical scoreless until late in the second half, when Tyrone Field ran from half-way to score a fine goal.
Cashmere-Wanderers under--13 team were put under pressure from the start of their match with Burndale United, and eventually went down, 4-0. Andrew McDermott scored the first from a pin-point cross by Stephen Toohey. Then it was Toohey’s turn to score after a poor clearance, and again with a header from a corner-kick. McDermott added his second
soon after. Korosh Monsef, Colin Evans and Vaughan Snowdon were the best of the Cashmere team.
Michael Patterson had a hand in three of his team’s goals as North Beach under-13 beat Cashmere B, 5-2. He scored twice and set up Julian Miller for another. Jamie Emerson and Aaron Tunnicliffe were the other goal scorers.
Paul Sinclair scored a goal in each half for Cashmere B. To end a bad day for Cashmere, its under-13 C team was soundly hammered by St Andrews, 8-2. Carwyn Cockerill scored four times, Andrew Hobby, Ellery Hurn, Carl Stewart and an own goal comprising the others. Ben Neville and Yiorgi Halloumis worked hard in the midfield.
For Cashmere, Andrew McDrury and Darren Richardson scored a goal in each half and Richard Grimwood had a good game.
