Three share squash lead
Christchurch Football, Linwood, and Sumner I all have the possible of 20 points after the first two weeks in the New Zealand Permanent men’s division one squash competition. The hardest pushed of these teams on Tuesday evening was Football whose top two players, John Oakley and Tim Cook, both needed five games to beat their opponents. Another team within reach of the leaders is Marist, whose No. 1, Lyn Sparks, suffered a slightly surprising straight games loss at the hands of Malcolm Mcßain (Christchurch II) who was in fine touch with his volleys and drop shots. At Ashburton the home team upset a below-strength High School Boys side which had had to call upon two division three players. Malcolm Thomson had a good 3-1 win over his fellow No. 1, Lawrence Skurr. In the women’s competition the new team, Mount Pleasant, recorded a clean sweep over Lincoln College and is threatening to run away with the first round.
Remarkably, the Burnside team all but tied its match for
the second time in succession. The matches were 2-2, the games 6-6, but Burnside won on a countback with 70 points to Lancaster Park’s 69. Results. MEN Christchurch Football 10, Burnside I 0 J. B.
