Ancient skeleton found
NZPA-Reuter Belmont Amateur paleontologists working in a quarry in south-east France have discovered an Um ichthyosaur skeleton, one of the largest specimens of the prehistoric marine reptile to be found. Jacques Igolen, the head of the local paleontology club in Belmont, near Lyons, said the team had uncovered a vertebra recently while digging at a site 40m below’ ground level. Two days were spent dislodging the rest of the skeleton from clay, scraping with knives and brushes to avoid harming the 180-million-year-old bones. The ichthyosaur was a giant fishlike animal with four paddles and an elongated. snout and tail. , r k
